Your grace and wit displayed to the world,
from a famous house decorated in White.
A stage often unforgiving to some,
you represented a cause known as right.
You chose to fight for those who couldn’t read,
a literacy campaign was your primary mission.
While you carried out your stately duties,
in keeping with American First Lady tradition.
You were a devoted wife to a president,
the mother of another Commander-in-Chief.
Instilling morals in politics was your gift,
not shying away from your own belief.
Our nation needed your presence,
in a world so uncertain and corrupt.
Your departure was a surprise to many,
one day in the news, then a death so abrupt.
Good bye Mrs. Barbara Pierce Bush,
a mother figure to many in our land.
You will be missed by people near and far,
I salute you with my Veteran’s hand.
