Poem: The Wheel

policeii

Blue lights in my rearview mirror,

my stomach begins to tighten.

I pull my car to the side of the road,

all senses begin to heighten.

“Put your hands on the wheel,”

yells the officer from his car.

I open my car door to comply,

but my body doesn’t get very far.

The sound of gunfire fills the air,

my leg feels like it’s on fire.

I wonder what I did wrong,

as I reach out towards the front tire.
