Restrained by Shackles
By David Andre Davison
We are restrained by shackles,
by prejudice and hateful ideology.
Why do we keep some races down,
will they ever break free?
On ships came slaves,
from a continent far away.
They were treated as cargo,
death and disease part of every day.
The Native people s were free,
roaming the woods and plains.
Then came the white settlers,
inflicting hardship and pain.
To our Mexican neighbors,
who resided in the southwest.
We seized vast tracts of land,
you know the rest.
The natives of Central and South America,
the Inca, Mayan, and Aztec.
Lost their gold, religion and culture,
their lives the conquistadors did wreck.
The inquisition forced people to confess,
under extreme torture and pain.
Did Christians treat people like this?
it sounds rather insane.
But perhaps the cruelest act,
is to take away a person’s hope.
This has been done by synthetic forces,
through varieties of illicit dope.
The police were once respected,
to serve and protect us all.
However, after Ferguson, and Baltimore,
their statute it did fall.
Modern music is rather creative,
some people combine songs into “mash.”
Unfortunately, some singers use lyrics,
which are nothing more than trash.
What motivates such evil acts,
creating pain and despair?
Could it be an evil being,
be removing our ability to care?
Perhaps it is time for reflection,
To look at the past as more than history.
We need to uncover the reason,
for our motivational mystery.
What lies in the past is permanent,
beyond our ability to mold.
The visions may haunt our memory,
when the truth is finally told.
Change must start this very day,
beginning with me I reckon.
Treating people as people first,
with politics and culture, a distant second.
The healing process must begin before,
this world faces further decay.
or the days of peace will come to an end,
and war will be the order of the day.
