Poem: Why Fight for Land?

Why Fight for Land?

By David Andre Davison

They say that wars are fought for land,

A way to expand our borders.

A soldier must do what a diplomat cannot,

Their better at following orders.

All the bloodshed, the pain, and despair,

We sacrifice for seizing dirt and sand.

Is human life worth such a sacrifice,

Just to give our country more land?

Our young men bear the brunt,

With loss of innocence and health.

In order to fill the coffers,

Of heartless corporate wealth.

Why is it that the citizen,

Tolerates the loss of human life,

To make some women childless,

Or a widow of a young wife.

Can’t we find a way,

To put an end to this sick game?

Wouldn’t avoiding conflict,

Bring our president honor and fame?

Let’s use our power,

As voters in our own domain.

To bring an end to the genocide,

The suffering and the pain.

For tomorrow may be brighter,

With hope and blue skies.

Where a teacher can finally teach History,

Without spewing out the victors deceit and lies.
